What Blocks Your Writing?

I don't get writers block in the sense of not being able to think of anything to write, but I do manage to block myself from writing by convincing myself there are other tasks that MUST be completed first. My latest? I wanted a new screensaver and just couldn't find the 'right' picture. I've now been working on this for three days. In this time I've gotten NO writing done.

What silly things do you let interrupt your writing?

Tomorrow WILL be productive. That is my vow. But for now, here's my laptop wallpaper:

  1. Hmm, let's see. What blocks my writing? How about three books I've already written and can't get past ...

Nice post, C. And remind yourself of the weekend you locked yourself away and plowed through, what was it? 15,000 words?

    All will be well.

  2. I'm laughing on the inside, hysterically, because (my)life mirrors your blog post! It's too late to laugh out loud...I have actually cruised through the real Bermuda Triangle. It did prove probmatic and slightly unnerving. But your version is on the whole more terrible and enslaving.

  3. Perfection. I want it to be good the first time around and I can't figure out how to just get the words on the page. I can revise anything except an empty page.

  4. I really have to shut off my internet sometimes until I get started or I will be stuck on it. It does cause this phenomenon.

  5. Money stress can get hard to tune out. I can do it, but it takes great effort (and possibly wine) to let my creativity flow. And when my FAMILY is going through upheavals... somehow they think they ought to come first... but that is a physical obstacle, where the first is mental. I am pretty good about getting offline if I set myself deadlines.

  6. That looks like a great wall paper right there. Usually the only thing that gets in the way of my writing is blogging and reading and commenting on blogs. Er, wait.

  7. Just replace Twitter with Blogger, and...

Help me! I'm stuck in that Triangle!!

  8. I can certainly relate. Been putting off writing all day.

I don't get stuck for ideas, it's just the motivation to start that I lack. I can see why Stephen King used to write on cocaine.

  9. I can add Fantasy Baseball and Fantasy Football to the list. Very time consuming and distractive.

  11. My thoughts prevent me from writing sometimes. I convince myself that there's no point. It's not as if I'm writing a masterpiece. I am my worst enenmy.

    Love your screensaver.

  12. You do this too? I've been distracted of late by a daily contest listing email. You know, I'm just going to look at it quickly - and the next thing you know I haven't gotten any writing done. Sigh. Working on it...:)

  13. Hey, I guess you're too blocked to come up with something Hateful to share with us for a blogfest.

To me, being blocked is different from procrastinating. My biggest timewasters are probably the straight dope, and the National Novel Writing Month forums.

If you get a chance, check out a fellow writer's zombie story and help me make him wear an embarrassing shirt next year! It's the ultimate grudge match between social media and the zombies. Details are here:

  14. When I am bombarded by everyone else's needs I get discouraged...and what's worse when I finally have some time...I am blank.
