NaNo - when now????

I was so cool about NaNoWriMo this year. Planned way ahead. Figured I'd do a sequel to my children's mystery novel DOG SHOW DETECTIVE. Plotted it out, have character sketches and a few little plot twists all mapped out. Now I've changed my mind.

After much feedback from beta-readers, both writers and kids in the targeted age group, I've decided DOG SHOW DETECTIVE is not as completed as I first thought. I need to juice up the start and add something more to the main character to push us into caring about her. Knowing this may change other aspects of the story, I'm not sure I should be jumping into the sequel.

The big question is what project do I focus on for NaNo. I could do another kids' horror story like MY ZOMBIE DOG, or I could go with a Science-fiction YA piece, or a teen spy-thriller. No rush there's still two and half days before I need to begin writing. No hurry.

How are your NaNoWriMo plans coming?

  1. Two and a half days? Wait? How did that happen? *runs off to plot an outline*.

  2. I'm not doing it this year, but good luck to you.

  3. I make it I've got four days before Nano. Maybe my diary is wrong.

As for planning... Well I did start planning back in August but that story feels dead and boring now. So, no plot no problem.

I may give it a miss this year.

  4. Al I can say is Good Luck. I could never do it, especially not this year with a messed up computer and taking a class. I'll be cheering you on!

I'm sorry I've been posting and commenting less. Papers have been due. I spilled tea on my internal mouse, so using my computer brings new challenges. And so on. I'll try to be a better blogging buddy. xo

  5. Pull an all-nighter to plot and you'll do just fine ;) Good luck. I am sticking with the far easier PiBoIdMo!

  6. Plenty of time! i say write a logline for each idea and see which one grabs you (or maybe which grabs your kids).

  7. No hurry at all :) Maybe you'll just sit down at the computer on November 1st and start writing, and whatever it is you really want to write will be what starts showing up on the screen.

And I'm having the same problem in a story of mine - about needing to add something to the MC to make the reader care more, so if you come up with amy brilliant solutions, let me know :)

  8. I have to admit I know very little about this challenge but I do know of the basics I guess. I'm not brave enough for this but I do so admire those of you who are going for it! Good Luck!!!

  10. NaNo participants have my undying respect. I can't even imagine the output needed to complete the challenge.

As for what to write, I've heard others struggling with which project to choose. My own thoughts (for what it's worth) - go with whatever you feel will be most fun. That's the only way to sustain you through a month of concentrated effort.

  11. I wouldn't dare do NaNo. I can't even keep up with the platform campaign, as you can see from me finally visiting almost at the end of the campaign. It's not like I'm in another group. Well, I am in SF and humor but this is what I consider my primary group. So, short of cloning myself, I'll settle for querying during November and trying to keep my head above the social media waters. I may not have gone far enough back to find your third challenge but mine is #20. I'm going to check your older posts for yours now.

  12. I have a WIP that I will be developing. Its the final installment to my trilogy. I hope to write 25000 - 30,000 words. That will get me close to the editing stage!

Good luck to you and everyone else involved with Nano 2012!

  13. Looked at it, planned for it, ear marked it with numerous reminders...then thought better of it. Learning to say no to some things is as important as committing at times. But I sooooo admire your verve. Go for it Charmaine! Some of us have to!

    Happy Halloween!
