I is for Imagination

What I wouldn't give for the imagination of an 8yr. old.

Last night my youngest daughter started writing her new novel. Chapter one begins with a young girl walking through a rough town with her brand new puppy. Some tough boys hassle her but the puppy attacks, you see this book is about Vampire Puppies. The girl gets a little older and when she is 13 she joins the spy academy (as you do) and comes up with some ideas for using the vampire puppies.

I'm looking forward to reading this one, it will also feature zombie snails, which become fast when they're infected as zombies, rather than slow. Oh, and her main setting is a graveyard pet shop!

I'm also going to make a zombie recommendation (I never thought I'd hear myself say that). I downloaded  The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan Kindle edition to my iPhone. This book was mesmerising, I found the wistful style almost poetic, not at all what I would expect from a post-apocolyptic story that would also be able to horrify me most of the way through. I likes :-)

Have you entered my book giveaway contest yet? The draw closes on the 19th of April - so there's still time! You could win TWO of my favourite books for reading, writing and editing! Click HERE to enter!

  1. Your daughter sure has an imagination. That's excellent. She's 8? Wow!

I haven't read that book. I'm not into that kind of stuff at all. I've heard a lot of people say that there were way too many references to the ocean. Did you notice that?

  2. Ha, zombie snails! I love it!

I also enjoyed Forest of Hands and Teeth. I'm usually not into zombies either, but I found Ryan's world fascinating. Also, the story wasn't nearly as gruesome as I was afraid it would be. I just read The Dead-Tossed Waves and also enjoyed it, especially learning more about the world. It's so funny that both books have been nominated for romance awards - I don't usually think of "romance" and "zombies" going together!

  3. Those endearing puppies can turn on you if you're not good? Great story idea from your daughter.

  6. Far out! A great imagination is a wonderful thing to possess, and even better to put it to good use! Good for your daughter. Does she do a lot of reading? I'll bet so.
    Thanks for the interesting post.

  7. I love the imagination of my children. I am often amazed when my 10-year-old daughter shows me her writing projects. I don't help her anymore and she routinely comes home with 100% grades.

    Love the zombie snails!!

  8. What a great imagination for an 8 year old. I know you're very proud. I think it would be nice at times to have a vampire puppy! :)

  9. Paul, Sarah-Jane, Jaydee, Janel - Thanks for the comments, Matilda will be thrilled to know she's onto a winner.
Ruby - Yes, she is often caught reading after bedtime :-)
Alliterative Allomorph - Ocean is mentioned a lot, the main character has an obsession to see the ocean, and it surprisingly does not read like a zombie story (although I haven't read any other zombie stories, so I'm not sure). I actually can NOT watch zombie movies, any other horror is fine, but flesh eating freaks me a bit :-o
Anna - I'm reading The Dead-Tossed Waves now!
Lisa - I suspect one of my doggies is already a vampire puppy, definitely has an evil side.

  13. That is so great that you encourage creativity in your daughter. I love her story ideas...not bad for a kid's book. I know my daughters would read about vampire puppies. They loved Bunnicula...a dracula bunny.

  14. Your daughter sounds brilliant!

The Forest of Hands and Teeth is only two more books down in my reading pile. I'm super excited to read it. :-)

  15. Ellie, Niki, Medeia, Raquel, Shannon - Thanks! We actually got her one of those mini laptops for Christmas because she writes all the time. This is her second book, her first one is called 'The Horse, The Dog and The Magician' - it includes a scene where the evil magician's wife walks in on him and catches him in a pink dress dancing and miming to 'I'm a Barbie Girl' - she's a weird kid :-)

Niki and Shannon, I think you'll love the book! It's strangely sweet. I've almost finished the second novel (both can be stand alone and feature different protagonists) and I think it's even better than the first.
